Babirye, a mother of 5 in Budaka district had weaned her last born at 3 months and started feeding him with porridge. At 1 ½ years Isiko’s feet started swelling, he became sickly and begun losing weight rapidly. By the time Babirye took him to the hospital, Isiko weighed only 4kgs. He was diagnosed with severe malnutrition and admitted to the children’s ward. At the nutrition ward Babirye was relieved to learn that her son could be treated with RUTAFA. “Ndaba omwana wange obulamu bwe bulungi siyeyo embela mweyali” Masitula reflects on how her son, Derrick’s health has greatly improved. Masitula had taken her 3 year old to the hospital in Mbale with a terrible rush, wounds, and blisters she had suspected to be measles. Derrick’s body was swollen and he weighed 10kgs at the time he was admitted to the nutrition ward. Masitula and her son stayed at the hospital for 2 months as Derrick was treated with RUTAFA- Ready to Use Therapeutic Food(RUTF), fortified porridge, milk and other nutrient enriched foods. Masitula was also trained on how to prepare simple nutritious meals for Derrick and her 6 other children. On discharge, the swelling had completely disappeared, he weighed 8kgs, his skin had cleared , and he was more energetic than before.
